Cuba's women judo team travels to China for competition

HAVANA, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Cuba's women's judo team, which won the silver in September's World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, flied to China on Tuesday to take part in the World Championships for teams taking place in Beijing on Saturday and Sunday.

Driulis Gonzalez, joint team leader with Yurisel Laborde, has won four Olympic medals and seven world championship medals. Laborde won silver in the Athens Olympic Games and was world champion in 2005 and 2007. They are competing in the 63kg and 78kgcategories respectively.

The remaining team members are Yanet Bermoy, world champion at 48kg in 2005's Cairo championship; first-timer Susel Mustelier, in the 52kg category; Yurisleidis Lupetey, in the 57kg category; Yalennis Castillo in the 70kg category; and Idalis Ortiz in the more than 78kg category.

Dayanis Mestre, Anaisis Hernandez and Heidy Abreu are substitutes in the 48kg, 63kg and over 78kg categories respectively.

Ronaldo Veitia leads the coaching team with former judo star Legna Verdecia as his assistant.

After the championships, the team will travel through Asia, taking part in tournaments in Chinese city Quindao on Nov. 24 and 24, in South Korea on Dec. 1 and 2; and in Japan's Jigoro Kano Cupon Dec. 8 and 9.
