(Beijing, January 5) National champion team Beijing PLA won its opener of the "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 Handball Tournament by beating Anhui 27-21 at the Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium in Beijing this afternoon.

The Beijng PLA women's team, originally founded in 1991, has shown its unique technical style in domestic competitions over the past years, winning the national championship in 2002 and both the national champions cup and national championship in 2003, 2006 and 2007 respectively. The Anhui team, which was formed in 1958, is another strong contingent in the country as it has been ranking among the top three in the national championship for years.

In the first half, Beijing PLA, led by national team player Zong Wei, showed their edge in the offense side as they kept ahead with 16-9 thanks to the performances by Zong and her teammates Meng Fanjie and Li Weiwei.

Anhui tried to fight back and it was Zheng Dongdong who scored consecutive goals to cut the cushion. But due to the difference of the two teams' strength, Beijing PLA still maintained the control of the game with its bench players wrapping up the win 27-21.

In the 7-day tournament, teams of Beijing, Beijing PLA, Jiangsu and Guangdong will be vying for the men's gold while the women's group consists of Beijing, Beijing PLA, Jiangsu and Anhui.
