(Beijing, January 8) The group competition of the "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 Handball Tournament ended. After three-round women's group competition, Jiangsu came atop against Beijing in goal difference. In a men's group match, Beijing beat Jiangsu that had won the previous two matches to rise to the top.
In a last-round women's group match, Beijing sealed victory with two runs in the second half and eventually beat Beijing PLA, double champions in 2007, 34-28. In the other match, Jiangsu beat Anhui that had suffered two defeats 30-27.
After the women's group competition, both Jiangsu and Beijing earned two wins and one draw, but the former scored 3 goals more than the latter to come atop. Beijing PLA finished third with one win and two defeats, and Anhui bottomed with all three defeats.
In a last-round men's group match, Beijing beat Jiangsu that had won the previous two matches to rise to the top. In the other match, Beijing PLA that had suffered two defeats beat Guangdong 25-21 to clinch a precious victory.
After the men's group competition, Beijing led the list with two wins and one draw, Jiangsu came second with two wins and one defeat. Beijing PLA was ranked third with one win and two defeats and Guangdong bottomed with one draw and two defeats.
The elimination round following the group competition will start tomorrow, on both the men's and women's sides, the top placers and the second will meet the fourth and the third respectively. The winners of the matches tomorrow will be able to advance to the finals, while the losers will compete for third places.
